How to Get Your Utah Insurance License: Step-by-Step Guide

October 20, 2026 · PassReadyPro Team

Utah producers are licensed by the Utah Insurance Department. Utah has a distinctive process: you pass the exam at a Prometric test center, then apply and get fingerprinted at that same test center.

Quick answer: Utah's Prometric exams cost $32 for a single line and $44 for the combined Life/Accident & Health or Property & Casualty exams. Utah does not require a training course before the exam. Apply within 90 days of passing, with live-scan fingerprints taken at the Prometric test center.

Step 1: Confirm you're eligible

To qualify as a Utah resident producer you must be at least 18, be a Utah resident, be of good character and competency, and pass the required exam(s). Utah asks you to apply after passing — it does not pre-screen applicants.

Step 2: Prepare for the exam

The Department states that it does not require you to complete a training course before the exam, so you can study with materials of your choosing. A course built on the Utah outline is the fastest way to cover the general and Utah-law material. See the Utah courses →

Step 3: Register and pass the exam

Register with Prometric online or at (888) 226-8740, and pay the exam fee before you arrive. From Prometric's registration form:

ExamFee
Producer's Life$32
Producer's Accident & Health$32
Producer's Property$32
Producer's Casualty$32
Producer's Personal Lines$32
Combined Life, Accident & Health$44
Combined Property & Casualty$44

Exam fees are non-refundable and valid for 90 days from receipt. If you fail, you re-register and pay again.

Step 4: Apply and get fingerprinted

After you pass, you can apply on a kiosk at the test center (or online through Sircon or NIPR). The application includes a $32 FBI/BCI fingerprint fee ($12 FBI, $20 BCI), and Prometric charges a $6 fingerprint processing fee. Print your application confirmation, show it to the test center supervisor, and have your live-scan fingerprints taken — if you leave the test center, you'll need to return for them.

Your application and license fee must be submitted within 90 days of passing, or the exam must be retaken. The Department's bulletin lists the individual license fee at $75, while its separate fee schedule lists $70 for a full-line producer license, so confirm the current amount with the Department.

Keeping your license

Utah individual licenses are valid for two years and renew on the last day of your birth month; the first renewal can fall 24 to 35 months after issue. Producers complete 24 credit hours of continuing education every two years, including 3 hours of ethics (Utah Code 31A-23a-202).

Putting it together

Study to the Utah outline, take the Prometric exam, then apply and get fingerprinted at the test center within 90 days.
