How to Get Your Rhode Island Insurance License: Step-by-Step Guide

October 21, 2026 · PassReadyPro Team

Rhode Island producers are licensed by the Department of Business Regulation (DBR) Insurance Division. Exams are given by Pearson VUE, and Rhode Island has a distinctive extra step: a BCI background report from the Attorney General's office.

Quick answer: Rhode Island's Pearson VUE exams cost $80 each and the passing score is 70. There's no statutory pre-licensing requirement. After you pass, apply at NIPR ($120 license fee per DBR) and send DBR your BCI background report with your NIPR transaction number.

Step 1: Confirm you're eligible

DBR's checklist says there is no statutory pre-licensing requirement. NIPR lists the minimum age at 18, and non-citizens must email proof of eligibility to work in the U.S. to DBR. DBR's instructions (the edition we reviewed is dated February 2022, so confirm current details) also say errors and omissions insurance is required for all resident producers.

Step 2: Prepare for the exam

Use the content outlines in Pearson's handbook. A course built on the Rhode Island outline is the fastest way to cover the general and Rhode Island-law material. See the Rhode Island courses →

Step 3: Reserve and pass the exam

Reserve at Pearson VUE's Rhode Island page. Pearson's February 2026 handbook lists:

ExamPartsFee
Life ProducerGeneral 1 hr 15 min + State 45 min$80
Accident & Health ProducerGeneral 1 hr 15 min + State 45 min$80
Property ProducerGeneral 1 hr 15 min + State 45 min$80
Casualty ProducerGeneral 1 hr 15 min + State 45 min$80
Personal Lines ProducerGeneral 1 hr 30 min + State 45 min$80

First-time Property & Casualty candidates must register for both the Property and Casualty exams, and you can take two exams in one session. The passing score is 70, and you wait 24 hours before a retake.

Step 4: Background report and application

DBR's checklist: 3–5 days after you pass, complete your application at NIPR with the $120 license fee; obtain a BCI background report from the Rhode Island Attorney General's office (valid for 30 days); and email the BCI to dbr.inslic@dbr.ri.gov along with your NIPR transaction number.

Keeping your license

DBR's instructions say residents complete 24 credit hours of continuing education, including at least 3 hours of ethics, for each biennial license period. Persons licensed for 25 years who are age 55 at renewal are exempt under Rhode Island law (chapter 27-3.2).

Putting it together

Study to the Rhode Island outline, pass the Pearson VUE exams, then file at NIPR and send your BCI report to DBR.
