How to Get Your North Dakota Insurance License: Step-by-Step Guide

October 22, 2026 · PassReadyPro Team

North Dakota producers are licensed by the North Dakota Insurance Department. Exams are given by PSI, and you apply through NIPR after passing.

Quick answer: North Dakota's PSI exams cost $64 for Life and Annuity, Accident and Health, Property and Casualty, and $58 for Personal Lines. You need 70% to pass, can retest an unlimited number of times, and pay a $100 license fee through NIPR. The Department says North Dakota law no longer requires prelicensing courses.

Step 1: Confirm you're eligible

Per PSI's bulletin, a resident producer must be a North Dakota resident (or maintain a principal place of business in the state), be at least 18, be trustworthy, competent and financially responsible, pass the exam for each line, pay fees, and complete a criminal history record check. New residents who held a resident license in their previous state within the last 90 days are exempt from the exam for those lines.

Step 2: Prepare for the exam

The Department states that North Dakota law no longer requires prelicensing courses. A course built on the North Dakota outline is the fastest way to cover the general and state-law material. See the North Dakota courses →

Step 3: Register and pass the exam

Register at PSI's North Dakota page or by phone at (855) 340-3905. PSI's bulletin (dated December 2024, so confirm current fees) lists:

ExamFeeItemsTo pass
Life and Annuity (Product and Laws)$6411070% (77 correct)
Accident and Health (Product and Laws)$6411070% (77 correct)
Property (Product and Laws)$6411070% (77 correct)
Casualty (Product and Laws)$6411070% (77 correct)
Personal Lines$5811070% (77 correct)

Fees are non-refundable and valid for one year. You may retest an unlimited number of times; a passing score is valid for one year, and if you fail a portion of a two-portion exam you retake only that portion. PSI reports results to the Department within 48 hours of passing.

Step 4: Fingerprints and application

Initial resident applicants must be fingerprinted. The Department's page says the fingerprint fee will be $43 effective October 1, 2026. Then apply through NIPR; the initial license fee is $100, and adding a line to an active license has no fee. If you answer "yes" to a background question, send your written statement and court documents with the application.

Keeping your license

Licenses renew every two years and expire on the last day of your birth month; you can renew up to 90 days before expiration. Producers complete 24 hours of continuing education with 3 hours in ethics, reported at the end of the two-year period.

Putting it together

Study to the North Dakota outline, take the PSI exam (retake as often as you need), get fingerprinted, and apply through NIPR.
