How to Get Your New Hampshire Insurance License: Step-by-Step Guide
October 21, 2026 · PassReadyPro Team
New Hampshire producers are licensed by the New Hampshire Insurance Department. Exams are given by PSI, and you apply for the license through NIPR after passing.
Quick answer: New Hampshire's PSI exams cost $59 for a single line (Life, Accident & Health, Property, Casualty, Personal) and $72 for the combined Life, Accident & Health or Property & Casualty exams. You aren't required to take a pre-licensing course. Apply through NIPR after you pass.
Step 1: Confirm you're eligible
NIPR lists New Hampshire's minimum age at 18. Residents must pass the exam for the lines they want. If you're a new resident who held a producer license in another state within the past 90 days, PSI's bulletin says no exam is required. Applicants with a CPCU or CLU designation may need only the shorter New Hampshire laws-and-regulations exam for their line.
Step 2: Prepare for the exam
PSI's bulletin says the Department doesn't specify an official study manual and you aren't required to take a pre-licensing study course. A course built on the New Hampshire outline is the fastest way to cover the general and state-law material. See the New Hampshire courses →
Step 3: Register and pass the exam
Register at PSI's New Hampshire page or by phone at 855-340-3713. PSI's bulletin (dated August 2026) lists:
| Exam | Fee |
|---|---|
| Life | $59 |
| Accident and Health | $59 |
| Property | $59 |
| Casualty | $59 |
| Personal | $59 |
| Life, Accident and Health (combined) | $72 |
| Property and Casualty (combined) | $72 |
Fees are non-refundable and valid for one year from payment. Note that as of July 6, 2026, the Life and Life, Accident and Health exams are no longer offered with remote proctoring — they're in person at PSI testing locations. If you fail, you can't rebook the same day but can usually retest the next day depending on space. The bulletin doesn't state a passing score, so check your exam's content outline.
Step 4: Apply for the license
Submit your application online through NIPR: complete the NAIC Uniform Application, make sure your original passing exam results are on file, and pay the licensing fee. NIPR shows a $210 state fee for a producer license (plus NIPR's transaction fee); the Department's licensing-fee page has the current schedule.
What it actually costs
| Item | Cost |
|---|---|
| PSI exam (single line / combined) | $59 / $72 |
| State producer license fee (per NIPR) | $210 + NIPR transaction fee |
| Pre-licensing course | not required |
Keeping your license
New Hampshire licenses expire on the last day of your birth month and renew every two years. Producers complete 24 hours of continuing education each cycle, including at least 3 (and no more than 10) ethics hours, certified at least 60 days before the renewal date.
Putting it together
Study to the New Hampshire outline, take the PSI exam, and apply through NIPR.
