How to Get Your Nebraska Insurance License: Step-by-Step Guide
October 21, 2026 · PassReadyPro Team
Nebraska producers are licensed by the Nebraska Department of Insurance. Exams are given by PSI (the state's test provider since February 1, 2023), and you apply for the license through NIPR.
Quick answer: Nebraska's PSI exams cost $43 for a single line (Life, Accident & Health, Property, Casualty, Personal Lines) and $47 for the combined Property & Casualty or Life, Accident & Health exams. The passing score is 70%, there's no limit on retakes, and you apply through NIPR within one year of passing.
Step 1: Confirm you're eligible
Nebraska residents must be at least 18, be competent, trustworthy and financially responsible with a good reputation, maintain a principal residence in Nebraska, and pass a written exam for each line they want. Moving from another state? PSI's bulletin says a new resident who held a producer license in another state within the past 90 days doesn't need to take the exam.
Step 2: Prepare for the exam
PSI's bulletin lists no pre-licensing education step; the Department publishes content outlines and PSI offers practice exams. A course built on the Nebraska outline is the fastest way to cover the general and Nebraska-law material. See the Nebraska courses →
Step 3: Register and pass the exam
Register at PSI's Nebraska page. The bulletin (the edition we reviewed is dated February 2024, so confirm current fees when you register) lists:
| Exam | Items | Fee |
|---|---|---|
| Life | 100 | $43 |
| Accident & Health or Sickness | 100 | $43 |
| Property | 100 | $43 |
| Casualty | 100 | $43 |
| Personal Lines | 100 | $43 |
| Property & Casualty (combined) | 150 | $47 |
| Life, Accident & Health (combined) | 150 | $47 |
The passing score is 70%. Fees are non-refundable and valid for one year. Nebraska exams are open eligibility — you can test unlimited times until you pass; after a failed attempt you can't book the same day but can usually retest as soon as the next day, depending on space.
Step 4: Apply for the license
PSI uploads passing results to the Department; allow 2–3 days for them to appear. Then apply at NIPR — the bulletin says all application materials and fees must reach the Department within one year of passing. NIPR shows a $50 state fee for a producer license (plus NIPR's transaction fee). Allow 3–5 days for processing, then print your license from NIPR.
What it actually costs
| Item | Cost |
|---|---|
| PSI exam (single line / combined) | $43 / $47 |
| State producer license fee (per NIPR) | $50 + NIPR transaction fee |
| Pre-licensing course | not listed as required |
Keeping your license
Licenses expire on the last day of your birth month and renew every two years (even birth years renew in even years, odd in odd). Producers complete 24 hours of continuing education every two years: 21 hours plus 3 hours of ethics, and are exempt from CE for the first renewal. A late renewal within 30 days carries a $40 late fee.
Putting it together
Study to the Nebraska outline, take the PSI exam, then apply through NIPR within a year.
