How to Get Your Louisiana Insurance License: Step-by-Step Guide

October 20, 2026 · PassReadyPro Team

Louisiana producers are licensed by the Louisiana Department of Insurance (LDI), and the exams are given by PSI. There's no pre-licensing requirement for the standard producer exams, so the path is: pass the exam, get fingerprinted, apply through NIPR.

Quick answer: Louisiana's PSI exams cost $36 for a single line (Life, Health & Accident, Property, Casualty or Personal Lines) and $58 for the combined Life/Health or Property/Casualty exams, according to PSI's bulletin. There are no pre-licensing requirements for these exams. Apply through NIPR after you pass.

Step 1: Confirm you're eligible

Check the requirements on the Louisiana Department of Insurance site before you book — the bulletin leaves eligibility details to the Department.

Step 2: Prepare for the exam

PSI's bulletin states there are no pre-licensing requirements for the producer examinations (pre-licensing applies only to public adjuster and bail bond licenses). A course built on the Louisiana outline is the fastest way to cover the general and state-law material. See the Louisiana courses →

Step 3: Register and pass the exam

Register online at PSI's Louisiana page or by phone at (855) 579-4644. Since July 8, 2024, Louisiana exams are given only at PSI test centers (remote testing was discontinued). PSI's bulletin (updated January 1, 2025 — confirm current fees when you register) lists:

ExamFee
Life$36
Health & Accident or Sickness$36
Life, Health & Accident or Sickness (combined)$58
Property$36
Casualty$36
Property & Casualty (combined)$58
Personal Lines (Producer)$36

Fees are non-refundable and non-transferable, and you forfeit the fee if you don't cancel at least two days ahead. You can't book a new exam the same day you test, but the bulletin doesn't cap the number of attempts. The passing score for each exam is on PSI's content outline for that exam.

Step 4: Get fingerprinted and apply

Louisiana uses IdentoGO/Idemia for fingerprinting; you schedule a Livescan appointment following the Department's instructions. Fingerprints aren't required for a licensed resident adding a line to an existing license. File your application through NIPR; the Department reviews your exam result and background before issuing the license. The bulletin doesn't list the state license fee, so check the Department's page for the current amount.

Keeping your license

Louisiana licenses renew every two years. Producers complete 24 hours of continuing education each renewal: life and health producers need at least 3 ethics hours, and property and casualty producers need at least 3 ethics and 3 flood hours. Up to 10 excess hours carry over. If CE isn't completed, the license expires; an expired license can be reinstated within two years (La. R.S. 22:1573 and 22:1547).

Putting it together

Study to the Louisiana outline, register with PSI, get fingerprinted through IdentoGO, and file through NIPR.
