How to Get Your Kansas Insurance License: Step-by-Step Guide
October 20, 2026 · PassReadyPro Team
Kansas producers are licensed by the Kansas Insurance Department. Kansas has a few extra steps compared with many states: a tax clearance and a fingerprint background check, along with the exam and the NIPR application.
Quick answer: Kansas exams are given by Pearson VUE and cost $57 for a single line or $64 for the combined Life and Accident & Health or Property & Casualty exams. The passing score is 70%. Kansas has no pre-licensing education requirement. You'll also need a tax clearance, fingerprints, and the NIPR application.
Step 1: Confirm you're eligible and gather the extras
Per Pearson's July 2026 handbook, Kansas applicants must:
- Apply for a tax clearance from the Kansas Department of Revenue and email it to the Department.
- Be fingerprinted and electronically submit the background Waiver Agreement and FBI Privacy Act Statement form. Pearson offers digital fingerprinting at its Overland Park, Topeka and Wichita test centers ($20 fee at reservation); fingerprints are valid for 365 days.
- Apply through NIPR — the handbook lists a $30 application fee and a $60 fingerprinting fee paid at application. You'll also upload a copy of your Kansas driver's license or ID.
You can apply either before the exam or after passing; exam scores are valid for two years.
Step 2: Prepare for the exam
Kansas does not have a pre-licensing education requirement. A course built on the Kansas outline is the fastest way to cover the general and Kansas-law material. See the Kansas courses →
Step 3: Reserve and pass the exam
Reserve at least 24 hours ahead through Pearson VUE's Kansas page or by phone. Pearson's handbook lists:
| Exam | Time | Fee |
|---|---|---|
| Life Producer | 90 min | $57 |
| Accident & Health Producer | 90 min | $57 |
| Property and Allied Lines Producer | 90 min | $57 |
| Casualty and Allied Lines Producer | 90 min | $57 |
| Personal Lines Producer | 90 min | $57 |
| Life and Accident & Health (combined) | 150 min | $64 |
| Property & Casualty and Allied Lines (combined) | 150 min | $64 |
The passing score is 70%. On a combined exam you must pass the entire exam. The handbook asks you to wait at least 24 hours before booking a retake and also states a seven-calendar-day wait after a failed attempt, with no limit on the number of tries — plan on about a week.
Step 4: Finish the application
With your tax clearance sent, fingerprints done and the exam passed, complete your NIPR application and fees. Once licensed, ask each insurer you want to represent to appoint you.
What it actually costs
| Item | Cost |
|---|---|
| Pearson VUE exam (single line / combined) | $57 / $64 |
| Application fee (NIPR) | $30 |
| Fingerprinting | $60 at application; Pearson reservation fee $20 |
| Pre-licensing course | not required |
Keeping your license
Kansas producers complete 18 credit hours of continuing education every two years, including at least 3 hours of ethics. The due date is the last day of your birth month; if proof isn't filed, the license is suspended for up to 90 days with a penalty (K.S.A. 40-4903).
Putting it together
Study to the Kansas outline, send the tax clearance, get fingerprinted, pass the Pearson exam and file through NIPR.
