How to Get Your Idaho Insurance License: Step-by-Step Guide
October 21, 2026 · PassReadyPro Team
Idaho producers are licensed by the Idaho Department of Insurance. Exams are given by Pearson VUE (since September 2023), and Idaho builds fingerprinting into the same reservation flow.
Quick answer: Idaho's Pearson VUE producer exams cost $65 each. Your passing result is valid for 180 days, there's no limit on attempts, and you must be fingerprinted — Idaho encourages electronic fingerprints at a Pearson location. Then apply through NIPR (the state fee shown there is $80).
Step 1: Confirm you're eligible
NIPR lists Idaho's minimum age at 18 for producers. You don't need the state's approval to take the exam. Moving to Idaho? Pearson's handbook says new residents may take the Idaho exam at any Pearson VUE test center nationwide before moving.
Step 2: Prepare for the exam
The Department publishes study guides by line of authority and the handbook's content outlines. Each major-lines exam has a general part and an Idaho-law part, and if you fail one part you retake only that part. A course built on the Idaho outline is the fastest way to cover both. Step 3: Register and pass the exam
Register at Pearson VUE's Idaho page, at a test center or online, in English or Spanish. Pearson's October 2025 handbook lists:
| Exam | Time | Fee |
|---|---|---|
| Life Producer | 120 min | $65 |
| Accident & Health or Sickness | 120 min | $65 |
| Property | 105 min | $65 |
| Casualty | 105 min | $65 |
| Personal Lines | 120 min | $65 |
Reserve at least 48 hours ahead online (24 hours by phone). If you fail, wait 24 hours before retaking; there is no limit on attempts.
Step 4: Fingerprints and application
The Department's step-by-step guide has you add a fingerprint appointment to your Pearson reservation — electronic fingerprints at a Pearson location in Boise, Pocatello or Spokane, or a hard card by mail if you can't travel. Fingerprints are valid for six months. Then apply at NIPR immediately after fingerprinting — your fingerprints can't be processed until an application is submitted, so don't wait for the report. Allow up to 48 hours after passing for results to reach NIPR. All fees are non-refundable.
What it actually costs
| Item | Cost |
|---|---|
| Pearson VUE exam (per exam) | $65 |
| Fingerprinting | booked and paid with Pearson; see the Department's guide |
| State producer license fee (per NIPR) | $80 + NIPR transaction fee |
| Pre-licensing course | not required |
Keeping your license
Idaho licenses renew every two years. Producers complete 24 hours of continuing education every two years, including at least 3 hours of ethics. A lapsed license can be reinstated without an exam within 12 months by paying double the unpaid renewal fee.
Putting it together
Study to the Idaho outline, book the Pearson exam with a fingerprint appointment, and file through NIPR right after fingerprinting.
