How to Get Your Delaware Insurance License: Step-by-Step Guide

October 21, 2026 · PassReadyPro Team

Delaware producers are licensed by the Delaware Department of Insurance. Exams are given by Pearson VUE, you apply electronically through NIPR, and Delaware requires a state criminal background report.

Quick answer: Delaware's Pearson VUE exam fee is $90, and taking more than one major-line exam in the same day costs only one fee (Personal Lines excluded). The Department doesn't require a specific pre-licensing education program. The resident license fee is $125, and you must send a State Criminal Background Report after applying through NIPR.

Step 1: Confirm you're eligible

Pearson's June 2025 handbook says the Department does not require a specific program of pre-licensing education or otherwise pre-screen exam candidates. The Department accepts only electronic applications.

Step 2: Prepare for the exam

Delaware producer exams have two portions — content, and statutes and regulations — and major-line candidates who fail one portion retake only that portion, but must pass it within one year of passing the first. A course built on the Delaware outline is the fastest way to cover both. See the Delaware courses →

Step 3: Reserve and pass the exam

Reserve at least 24 hours ahead at Pearson VUE's Delaware page or by phone at (800) 274-0455. Walk-ins aren't available. The handbook states an examination fee of $90, paid at reservation; if you schedule more than one major-line exam the same day (for example Life and Accident & Health) you pay a single $90 fee, but Personal Lines is charged separately. Fees are non-refundable and non-transferable.

Delaware equates its exam forms, so the passing score is a scaled score: some exams require 70 and others 80, and your score report lists the one that applies. After a fail, wait 24 hours before rebooking. Passing results are sent electronically from Pearson to the Department.

Step 4: Apply and send the background report

Apply at NIPR with the $125 fee. After you submit, fax your State Criminal Background Report (from the Delaware State Police, 302-739-2528) to the Department at 302-736-7906 — exam results don't need to be faxed. Check the Department's licensing page for current instructions.

Keeping your license

Delaware requires continuing education to maintain a license; the hours are set by Regulation 504, so check the Department's current requirements. Failure to meet CE can bring penalties up to license suspension and a $2,000 fine.

Putting it together

Study to the Delaware outline, take the Pearson VUE exam, then apply through NIPR and send your criminal background report.
