How to Get Your Alabama Insurance License: Step-by-Step Guide
October 20, 2026 · PassReadyPro Team
Alabama producers are licensed by the Alabama Department of Insurance (ALDOI). The state dropped its pre-licensing course requirement in 2024, so the path is: pass the exam, get fingerprinted through the approved vendor, submit proof of citizenship, and apply through NIPR.
Quick answer: Alabama's producer exam costs $50 for a single line and $75 for the combined Life & Health or Property & Casualty exam. A passing grade is 70, and your exam certificate is valid for one year. Alabama no longer requires a pre-licensing course. The state license fee is $80 plus a $5 NIPR fee.
Step 1: Confirm you're eligible
You must be at least 18 and must not have committed an act that is grounds for denial, suspension or revocation of a license — for example, providing false information on the application, a felony conviction, or a license denied or revoked in another state. See ALDOI's producer requirements for the full list.
Step 2: Prepare for the exam
Alabama's rules requiring a pre-licensing course were repealed effective January 1, 2024, so the exam, fingerprints and application are what remain. ALDOI publishes content outlines for each exam. A course built on those outlines — including the Alabama-law section — is the most direct way to prepare. See the Alabama courses →
Step 3: Register and pass the exam
Registration runs through the University of Alabama, ALDOI's exam vendor, with testing at five locations: Birmingham, Huntsville, Mobile, Tuscaloosa and Montgomery. ALDOI lists these fees:
| Exam | Fee |
|---|---|
| Single-line producer exam (e.g., Life, Property) | $50 |
| Combined Life and Health | $75 |
| Combined Property and Casualty | $75 |
Exam fees are non-refundable. Under ALDOI's rule, a passing grade is a total of 70 out of 100, and the results certificate is valid for one year. After repeated failures on the same line, the rule adds waiting periods — 90 days after two failed attempts, and 180 days after two more (Ala. Admin. Code 482-1-147) — so it pays to be ready before you sit.
Step 4: Fingerprints, proof of citizenship and application
- Fingerprints: ALDOI accepts only fingerprints processed through Fieldprint, taken for an Alabama license application. Results stay in the Department's system for only 30 days, so time your application to match.
- Proof of citizenship: Alabama verifies the citizenship of every applicant under the Beason-Hammon Act. Your license won't be issued until the documentation arrives, and the application is rejected if it isn't received within 10 days.
- Apply: ALDOI asks you to wait 3–5 business days after passing, then apply online through NIPR. Select every line you want — adding one later costs a new fee.
What it actually costs
| Item | Cost |
|---|---|
| Exam (single line / combined) | $50 / $75 |
| Initial producer license (ALDOI) | $80 + $5 NIPR fee |
| Fieldprint fingerprinting | set by the vendor |
| Pre-licensing course | not required |
Keeping your license
Producer licenses renew every two years in your birth month. ALDOI lists a $70 biennial renewal fee and a $50 late fee, with a 30-day grace period after expiration. Producers complete 24 classroom hours of continuing education, including 3 hours of ethics, each renewal cycle (Reg. 482-1-110).
Putting it together
Study to the Alabama outline, pass the exam, get Fieldprint fingerprints and submit proof of citizenship, then apply through NIPR 3–5 business days after you pass.
