Texas Property & Casualty License: Exam Guide & Requirements

September 8, 2026 · PassReadyPro Team

In Texas, selling home, auto, and business insurance takes a General Lines – Property & Casualty agent license. Here's the process from start to finish.

Quick answer: Texas doesn't require P&C study hours. You pass Pearson VUE's General Lines – Property & Casualty exam (150 minutes, $49, a scaled score of 70 to pass), get fingerprinted through IdentoGO, and apply through TDI with a $50 fee within 12 months of passing.

Who can apply

TDI licenses General Lines P&C agents who are at least 18, have passed the exam, and submit a complete application with the fee and fingerprint receipt. A license can be denied for the acts listed in § 4005.101 of the Texas Insurance Code, so check your own history against TDI's guidance first. There's no limit on exam attempts, and you can retest as soon as the next day.

How much you'll need to study

Texas doesn't require pre-licensing education for this license. As a planning guide, most P&C candidates spend roughly 25–35 hours preparing — the General Lines P&C exam runs 150 minutes and covers a wide span of material.

What the exam covers

The General Lines – Property & Casualty exam (exam code InsTC-PC06) has two parts on one score:

  • A general section — property and casualty concepts, contract law, homeowners, personal and commercial auto, commercial package policies, workers' compensation basics.
  • A Texas section — insurance laws, rules, and regulations unique to Texas: agent licensing, unfair claims practices, cancellation and nonrenewal rules, the Texas windstorm and FAIR Plan associations, and more.

The two parts are scored together as one exam. The passing score is a scaled score of 70 on a 0–100 scale, set by TDI — it's not the raw percentage you answered correctly. A handful of unscored pretest questions are mixed in. Pearson VUE's content outline for this exam lists the exact topic weighting — our Texas Property & Casualty course is built to match it.

Reserving and taking the exam

Exams are administered by Pearson VUE, at a test center or by online proctoring, for a $49 fee paid at reservation. Reserve at least 24 hours ahead. On exam day:

  • Bring two forms of current signature ID — a primary government photo ID plus a secondary ID with a signature. No grace periods on expired IDs.
  • Report 30 minutes early.
  • Silent, non-printing, non-alphabetic calculators are allowed; financial calculators aren't.
  • You leave with your official score in hand.

If you don't pass, schedule a new attempt as early as the next day — there's no cap.

Applying after you pass

Passing is step one. Apply electronically at sircon.com/texas or NIPR with the $50 fee and your IdentoGO fingerprint receipt, within 12 months of passing or you retake the exam. Resident applicants must be fingerprinted through IdentoGO by IDEMIA, with the prints sent to the Texas Department of Public Safety.

Staying licensed

A Texas agent license is valid for two years. Renewing takes 24 hours of continuing education every two years — 3 hours ethics, at least half in a classroom. TDI mails one renewal notice about 90 days before expiration. Let a license lapse and you face a late fee (under 90 days), reinstatement (90 days to a year), or a full new application (over a year). See TDI's agent licensing page.

A realistic timeline

Between studying, reserving the exam and fingerprint appointment, and applying electronically, most candidates go from starting a course to an active Texas P&C license in roughly two to five weeks.
